Brighouse School is going to National Business Competition

Posted 6 years ago

Brighouse High School will represent Yorkshire & Humber at the Young Enterprise National Competition at the Emirates Stadium in London on the 6th & 7th July.

When eleven year 12 students at Brighouse High School started their business, Unity Publishing, as part of the Young Enterprise (YE) Company Programme, little did they know that their journey would lead them to represent Yorkshire & Humber in London to compete with other YE’s regional winners in the UK.

Each year around 2,000 teams take part from the UK and Gibraltar in the YE Company Programme.  Only 14 teams make it to the UK National Final and Brighouse High School is one of these!  In 2015, over 23,000 students took part and have raised £2 million in turnover.

Unity Publishing is the creator of Monty and The Grizzlies children book, a fun, yet educational story book which aims to help children learn about accepting others with differences.  The team worked in collaboration with A level student and aspiring writer, Francesca Broadbent to create this story.  Almost 400 books have already been sold, many to local primary schools.

Unity Publishing have won a hat-trick of awards for Best Company of the Year, Best Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Best Social, Ethical & Environmental at the 1st round of the YE Company Programme West Yorkshire Area 2 Final in March.

The team went on to win the 2nd round at YE County Final in May and achieved two further awards for Best Marketing, Sales & Customer Focus, and as overall winner the Best Company to secure their place at the 3rd round. The Regional Final took place on the 9th June where they were named for 3 awards - Best Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Creativity, and Best Company.  They also launched their second book, Gemma the Giant Giraffe, which addresses social inclusion issues, at the regional final.

The students and their business are supervised by Suzannah Carter, Associate Senior Leader of Brighouse High School, and Susan Smith, YE Company Programme’s volunteer Business Advisor and Marketing Manager of Brighouse based telecoms service provider Abzorb.

As well as teachers and staff at Brighouse High School and Abzorb, other Unity Publishing’s supporters include Simprint, Panda Media and JW Lister Wireworks of Brighouse, and Gary King of Tendo in Leeds.

“Our mission is to promote a united society for the next generation. We set out with clear objectives of what we wanted to achieve.  We have developed from a one book publishing company to one with a developing product range.  Our success continues to drive us further and we have grown in confidence and unity.  Being recognised for our achievements is definitely the icing on the cake and we are really excited and determined to make Yorkshire and Humber proud!” said Ellie-Mae Turner, Managing Director of Unity Publishing.

Liz Cresswell, Head Teacher of Brighouse High School commented, “We are absolutely delighted with our students’ achievements.  They have worked extremely hard despite their commitment to their final exams.  It’s truly amazing what has been accomplished by the team.  The business and life skills that they have developed will provide a solid foundation for whatever they decide to do at the end of their academic year.  Everyone at the school is behind them and we wish them all the very best of luck in London.”
