Calderdale students bag awards at Young Enterprise competition area finals

Sixth form students from Brighouse High School were crowned Best Company of the Year at the Young Enterprise Company Programme West Yorkshire Area 2 Final on 22nd March 2016. They also won Best Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Best Social, Ethical & Environmental, a fantastic hat-trick achievement!

The students’ company, Unity Publishing, the creator of Monty and The Grizzlies children book, a fun, yet educational story book, aims to help children learn about accepting others with differences. The company, which consists of eleven year 12 students, worked in collaboration with an A level student and an aspiring writer, Francesca Broadbent to create the story.

The business is overseen by the project campaigner Suzannah Carter, Associate Senior Leader of Brighouse High School, with the assistance of Susan Smith, Young Enterprise Company Programme’s Business Advisor and Marketing Manager of Brighouse based telecoms service provider Abzorb. The team honed in on their entrepreneurial skills to create their first book whilst developing key skills including market research and used monies raised from fund raising events to complete the finished product. Over 200 books have already been sold to beat off stiff competition from 3 other teams to be the overall winners.

Ellie-Mae Turner, Unity Publishing’s Managing Director said:

“We are thrilled to have won our awards and especially as overall winners. This just shows our hard work since September has been well worth it and we are looking forward to many more months of the programme to come.

Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading charity that empowers young people to harness their personal and business skills. Young Enterprise’s Company Programme is supported by HSBC and is aimed at 15 to 19 year olds. Participants set up and run businesses for an academic year, guided by local mentors.

Chloe Hannath, Young Enterprise Manager for West Yorkshire said:

“We had some great companies started up by students in West Yorkshire this year and the judges were incredibly impressed with the products and services they had developed and the presentations they gave at the Awards.

“The Awards highlighted how the Young Enterprise Company Programme can inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow and help them develop practical business skills while they are still at school.

Michael Mercieca, Chief Executive of Young Enterprise said:

“The Area Finals are the first stage in finding the UK’s Best Overall Company, and all the teams here today have achieved so much over the past year.

“The Company Programme is a great platform for students to develop their skills such as confidence, teamwork and resilience and interact with their local business community along the way.

Susan Smith, Marketing Manager of Abzorb added:

“I am delighted to be working with a team of hard-working and inspiring students. As an experience professional, I am a firm believer of the importance of passing on knowledge and experience to the next generation of enterprising young people. When the opportunity came to join YE Company Programme, I jumped at the chance and am pleased that Abzorb also share my enthusiasm. It is with their support that I am able to mentor the students at times that would normally form part of my working day.”

The team will compete at the Company Programme West Yorkshire County Final on 11th May 2016.
