West Yorkshire Students Wins Young Enterprise County Finals Competition

Unity Publishing, the students’ company that created Monty and The Grizzlies children book which addresses social acceptance issues, will represent West Yorkshire at the Young Enterprise Company Programme Yorkshire and Humber Regional Final on the 9th June 2016.

12 sixth form students from Brighouse High School won three awards, Best Company of the Year, Best Innovation & Entrepreneurship and Best Social, Ethical & Environmental at the 1st round of the Young Enterprise Company Programme West Yorkshire Area 2 Final in March 2016.

The team qualified for the 2nd round of YE’s County Finals which took place on Wednesday 11th May in Leeds. Competing against four other Area finals’ winners and runner ups from West Yorkshire, Unity Publishing achieved two further awards for Best Marketing, Sales & Customer Focus, and as overall winner as Best Company to secure their place at the Regional Finals in June.

“We wanted to create a product that teaches young children about accepting others with differences, and we came to the conclusion that the best way to put this across in a way they would understand is through a storybook. Children can learn to socially accept all diverse types of people. So from a young age they can learn that not everyone is the same. We are also in the process of finding other routes to market such as making the book available to purchase online and at local book stores. For teachers, our books come with a lesson plan which we hope will help to make learning enjoyable. We are also creating a second book and a website which will be available in the coming weeks.” said Ellie Mae Turner, Managing Director of Unity Publishing.

Suzannah Carter, Associate Senior Leader of Brighouse High School and teacher of Unity Publishing’s pupils commented, “The students’ achievement is a reflection of their efforts and how far they have come in just a short space of time. We are very proud of the students and what a credit they are to themselves and to Brighouse Sixth Form.”

Chloe Hannath, Young Enterprise Manager for West Yorkshire added, “Under our flagship Company Programme, students find out what it’s really like to set up and run a business. Delivered across an academic year, young people make all the decisions about their company, including raising the initial share capital and designing their product or service to selling directly to customers. The team have done incredibly well to beat off stiff oppositions in the last two competitions. We are very excited for Unity Publishing and wish them all the best at the Regional Finals.”

Abzorb wishes all the best to the team at the regional competition.
