Team Abzorb’s Volunteering Day at Skelton Grange
Our team braved the stormy December weather to volunteer at Skelton Grange in Leeds.
When we arrived, the rain was bouncing down.
Luckily, by the time everyone turned up and had finished a brew, the rain had stopped and the team got to work.
Throughout the morning, there were a few downpours, offering welcome breaks to our hard-working team.

What did we do?
Our team helped out with a number of tasks during the day, including coppicing and building dead hedges for the centre.

Coppicing
The morning’s activity was coppicing. Coppicing is an ancient, sustainable woodland management technique where trees are cut back to their base. Once cut back to the roots, the trees are left to grow and are coppiced every three years.
A total of three trees were coppiced, all done with saws and axes – not a powertool in sight!

Building 'Dead Hedges'
After lunch we had blue skies, providing great conditions for the afternoon activities. We used the coppiced trees to build dead hedges. The larger branches were cut into stakes and planted in the ground.
Branches and brash from the coppicing process were piled up and woven to create dead hedges - lighter work than the morning’s activities!
Our day at Skelton Grange was a welcome change of environment for us office dwellers - we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Skelton Grange eco-centre.
Skelton Grange is an award-winning eco-centre and nature area in Leeds used by schools and the local community.
Established in 1992, the centre believes that looking after green places isn’t only about caring for nature, but about caring for people as well.

Our volunteering days at Skelton Grange Environmental Centre are great team building opportunities.
We’re pleased that we can make a positive contribution to Skelton Grange’s conservation projects. These away days allow our team to learn new skills whilst supporting the local environment.
Corporate volunteering days provide opportunities for our colleagues to connect with nature, improve green spaces, and develop conservation skills.
This initiative forms part of Abzorb’s wider environmental management approach which focuses on managing environmental impacts, protecting natural habitats, and contributing positively to local communities.
